Thoughts
Chapter 19 starts with the words, “What sorrow awaits Ariel, the city of David.” and then just three sentences later, we read, “For Jerusalem will become what her name Ariel means—an altar covered with blood.”
So I wondered, why did Isaiah refer to Jerusalem as Ariel?
Well, this is but about 70 different names for Jerusalem found in scripture and other ancient documents, each one with a different meaning. Many of our English translations give just the English translation for the Hebrew name that refers to Jerusalem in a particular verse, but the Hebrew scriptures obviously use the Hebrew names.
Ariel literally means Lion of God, but can also mean hearth, like the hearth of an altar where sacrifices are burned.
If you want to dig more, this is an interesting study, as so many names and words are in the Bible. One of the great things about the internet is that so many bible study tools are available. If you want to take your Bible study to a new level, take advantage of these tools.
