It Is Written β Matthew 3β4
It Is Written sets todayβs theme. In Matthew 3, John the Baptist emerges after centuries of silence, calling the people to repent because the kingdom of heaven is near. In Matthew 4, Jesus responds to temptation not by force of will, but by using Scripture. Each time the enemy tests Him, Jesus answers with the same phrase: βIt is written.β
In this episode, we read Matthew 3β4, reflect on Johnβs message and Jesusβ victory in the wilderness, and remember Godβs movement in history in our OTDICH segment.
Reading β Matthew 3β4
John the Baptist came as a prophet after 400 years of silence from God. His appearance was simple, his message direct: βRepent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.β Many believed and were baptized. Jesus comes to the Jordan, and the Father affirms Him as the Spirit descends. Identity, mission, and love are revealed together.
Immediately afterward, the Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness. After forty days of fasting, Satan tempts Him. But Jesus responds to each temptation with Scripture β not emotion or argument. His repetition of βIt is writtenβ teaches us how to stand firm when we face pressure, discouragement, or deceit.
Why βIt Is Writtenβ Matters
The Christian life is a spiritual battle, and Scripture is our primary weapon. In Ephesians 6:11β17, Paul describes the armor of God. Only one piece is offensive β the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
- Know Scripture
- Trust Scripture
- Speak Scripture when facing temptation or confusion
Reading the Word daily, meditating on it, and storing it in our hearts prepares us to stand firm when it matters.
On This Date in Church History β November 1 (Welsh Revival)
On November 1, 1904, a prayer meeting led by Evan Roberts in Wales sparked what would become the Welsh Revival. People confessed sin, reconciled relationships, and sought God with renewed intensity. Taverns closed for lack of customers, crime rates fell, and worship overflowed into the streets.
It didnβt start with programs.
It started with hearts bent in prayer.
