Thoughts
Chapter nine is Job eloquently talking about how futile it is to argue with God. I love the pictures Job paints with his words, don’t you?
But when I reread chapter 9, verse 13, “God does not hold back his anger. Even Rahab’s helpers bow humbly in front of him”, I stopped short. did anything occur to you? It did to me. I thought, “Why are we talking about Rahab?” She is the woman, a prostitute, who helped Joshua’s men spy on the Canaanite city by giving them shelter, in Joshua chapter 2. (By the way, she is also in the family tree of Jesus. Yes, Jesus has a prostitute for an ancestor.)Â
So I did some research. I found a couple things that I’ll share with you. According to the notes in the GWT from which we read today’s verses, “Rahab is the name of a demonic creature who opposes God.” But the Hebrew word rahab is also translated in some places as “pride”. So this verse could be rendered as, “Even pride’s helpers bow humbly in front of him.” So Job is saying in his poetic way here that no one can stand against God.
Job’s opening line in chapter 10 reminds me of Eeyor, from Winnie the Pooh. “I hate my life.” Obviously, Job had good reason to lament, though. And his words to God are pretty frank, aren’t they? People sometimes feel guilty about being angry at God. Or they feel guilty about questioning God. I tell them, go ahead and say it to Him. He knows you’re thinking it anyway. Be honest with Him. He can take it.Â
Job really is a wonderful book to read, preferably before you find yourself in a place similar to his. It honestly has helped me in my dark times. You don’t get to be my age without having some times of anguish, and I am really glad that the Lord gave us this book.
