Thoughts
So what do you think of this Jacob character? When he was born, he was grabbing his twin brother’s heel, presumably because he was trying to keep his brother Esau from being born first. Jacob’s name means “deceiver”, or “supplanter”. What does supplanter mean? dictionary.com defines it as: to take the place of (another), as through force, scheming, strategy, or the like.
We saw today that Jacob was at a minimum, a schemer, lazy, and a thief.
And yet, as we shall see in future chapters, he has the tables turned on him when it comes to lying.
And he will have an encounter with God that results in a brand new name. A name that has lasted through the millennia.
Here’s a teaser for you: God uses the most surprising people to carry out His purposes.
