Thoughts

In chapter seven, we read the regulations for the guilt offering, the fellowship offering and the priest’s share. In these regulations, there is the requirement that the fat be burnt as a sacrifice, and must not be eaten.

In our supposedly enlightened time, where we are told that fat is not healthy to eat, many of us would say, “Of course we wouldn’t eat the fat.” Well, there is actually a case to be made that some fat is actually good to eat, but I am not going to get into that discussion here. You can do your own research on that.

But let’s look at a few scriptures where fat is referenced.

Prov 28:25 He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the Lord shall be made fat. KJV

Isa 30:23 Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures. KJV

So you can see in these verses that “fat” is good. It means prosperous or plentiful.

Here’s another:

When Pharaoh invites Joseph to bring his family down to Egypt from Canaan, he tells Joseph to tell his brothers, “Bring your father and your households and come to me; I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land” (Gen. 45:18). The best part of the land is referred to as the fat of the land.

So when God made the regulations for the offerings, He was requiring the very best part of the animal.

We are to honor God with the best that we have to give.
