Our Days Are In His Hands

Job 14:1–6 (NLT)

When people think about the book of Job, they usually think about suffering. Yet tucked away in the middle of Job’s grief is a remarkable statement about God’s sovereignty:

Job 14:5 (NLT)
“You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer.”

Those words don’t answer every question we have about life and death, but they do remind us that our lives are never governed by luck or chance. God knows every day He has given us.

What Does Job 14:1–6 Mean?

Job compares human life to a flower that blooms for a season and then fades, and to a passing shadow that quickly disappears. His point isn’t that life is meaningless. Rather, life is precious because it is temporary.

Even while enduring tremendous suffering, Job never lost sight of God’s sovereignty. He believed that God remained on the throne, even when he didn’t understand what was happening around him.

What Should We Do With This Truth?

If God knows the number of our days, how should we live?

Scripture never suggests that we become careless or stop planning for the future. Instead, we’re called to live wisely, trusting God with what we cannot control while faithfully using the opportunities He gives us today.

Jesus echoed this truth when He reminded His disciples that the Father watches over every sparrow—and that we are worth far more than many sparrows (Matthew 10:29–31).

The future belongs to God.

Today is His gift to us.
